Corneal tissue must be collected within 6 hours of death. Family members and relatives can facilitate this noble act with simple immediate steps.
Gently close the eyelids of the deceased immediately.
Turn off ceiling fans directly above the body to avoid drying the cornea.
Place a clean, moist cloth or wet cotton pads gently over the closed eyes.
Slightly elevate the head by 6 inches to minimize bleeding during collection.
Call within 6 hours. The medical team arrives within 30-45 minutes.
